Information used for voting
Country
Cloudflare may derive a country code from the network request so the site can suggest a country and language. Participants can change the country before voting. VarVote stores the chosen country code with the ballot.
Anonymous voter token
The browser creates a random token. The server combines it with a private security value and stores only the resulting hash. This is used to reject straightforward repeat voting. VarVote does not require a name or email address for voting.
Technical information
Cloudflare processes standard network and security information needed to deliver and protect the site. Such processing may include IP addresses in Cloudflare systems. VarVote does not store the full IP address in its voting database.
Voting storage, analytics, advertising and cookies
To keep the same anonymous voting identity when browser storage is unavailable, VarVote stores the random voter token in local browser storage when available and in a necessary first-party, HttpOnly cookie. The token is hashed before it is stored with a ballot. The cookie does not contain a name, email address or vote choice.
VarVote uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate site traffic and engagement, including page views, opened decisions, recorded vote events and sharing actions. VarVote does not send the anonymous voter token, the selected country or a name or email address to Google Analytics. Analytics storage is denied by default until you choose “Accept analytics”. Your analytics choice can be changed at any time through “Consent settings” in the site footer.
VarVote also includes Google AdSense code. Once advertising is approved and enabled, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, local storage, device information and personal data for ad delivery, measurement, fraud prevention and, where valid consent permits, personalization. Advertising consent in the EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland is kept separate from VarVote’s analytics choice and must be handled through a Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework where required.
Declining analytics does not prevent the necessary first-party storage used to keep anonymous voting reliable. Changing an analytics choice to declined also causes VarVote to request that Google Analytics storage be denied and removes accessible Google Analytics cookies that VarVote can identify.

Purposes and retention
Voting data is used to calculate public aggregate results, prevent basic duplication and maintain the integrity of the service. Security and operational logs may be retained by infrastructure providers according to their own policies and configured retention periods. VarVote keeps ballot records while the vote remains active or while they are needed to document the published result.
Your choices and contact
You may use the site without creating an account. Because ballots are intentionally anonymous, VarVote may be unable to identify or delete a particular ballot without collecting additional identifying information.
